The HuT Project Insights from the 2025 Systemic Risk Conference
Abstract
The Systemic Risk Conference, held in Hamburg in September 2025, was organized within the framework of The Human-Tech Nexus (The HuT) EU project. The event congregated a diverse range of international experts, from researchers and practitioners to policy and decision makers engaged with the systemic risks associated with climate extremes, with the objective of fostering transdisciplinary exchange. These conference proceedings highlight key insights and developments displayed during the Innovation Fair of the conference by the ten European demonstrator case studies of The HuT. The demonstrators showcased innovative approaches to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, developed within their local contexts, yet convergent across four cross-cutting categories: (1) narrative co-creation and public engagement,(2) web-portals for effective early warning, (3) end-to-end evaluation for early warning improvement, and (4) scaling of policy-relevant findings. These advancements emphasize the relevance of participative multi-hazard risk management and creative solutions that address local challenges, while maintaining transferability across regions. Overall, the conference underscored the value of collaboration and co-production in advancing systemic risk research, building resilient communities, and strengthening preparedness and sustainable adaptation across municipalities, Europe and beyond.
