Strategy-making increasingly depends on integrating knowledge across functional and hierarchical boundaries, often through processes mediated by material artifacts. While research shows that the material properties of individual artifacts partly shape what can be known, discussed, and decided, less is known about knowledge integration during moments when a structured strategy tool moves it through materially distinct artifacts. Drawing on an ethnographic study of two strategic roadmapping projects in a large organization, we examine how transitions between artifact forms shape knowledge integration. We identify four artifact types, ephemeral, interim, stabilized, and analytical, and the transitions between materially distinct forms during which knowledge is reconstituted rather than simply carried forward. Across both projects, we identify three dynamics during these transitions: selection, surfacing, and reconfiguration. We contribute by identifying reconstitution as a knowledge-integration mechanism and by offering a tools-in-process account of how structured strategy tools work through transitions between artifact forms over time.

This paper extends the process of translation (PoT) by operationalising it as a methodological device for examining market formation in digitally mediated contexts. While PoT has traditionally been applied retrospectively as an analytical framework, limited guidance exists on how translation moments can be empirically identified as processes unfold. Integrating the PoT with issue mapping, this paper introduces concerned market mapping (CMM), to trace how agencements emerge, evolve and stabilise across digital platforms. Using the #ditchthestraw campaign as an illustrative case, the study demonstrates how problematisation, interessement, enrolment and mobilisation can be systematically identified within digital trace data. The findings show how digital devices participate in reconfiguring market agencements through recursive interactions. This paper aims to contribute methodologically by providing a framework for studying market dynamics in data-rich environments.
The study adopts a qualitative analysis approach to examine how digital market practices unfold through the PoT. Using scraped Instagram data from the #ditchthestraw campaign, the approach operationalises PoT as a methodological device by developing observable indicators for each translation moment and applying them systematically during coding. CMM integrates PoT sequencing with issue mapping to trace how visual, textual and relational devices reconfigure agencements in real time. This design enables the structured examination of distributed digital interactions and the dynamic formation of sustainable market practices.
The study demonstrates that operationalising the PoT enables systematic identification of how digital agencements evolve within online sustainability activism. Applying PoT to the #ditchthestraw campaign reveals how visual, textual and relational devices shift roles across problematisation, interessement, enrolment and mobilisation. Issue mapping shows how concerns cluster and reconfigure through digital interactions, highlighting distinct forms of denormalisation and normalisation as the campaign progresses. The findings show that digital devices are actively agencing market practices, moving from raising awareness to modelling alternatives and enrolling new actors. This approach makes visible the distributed processes through which market change unfolds in real time.
This study offers a novel methodological contribution by operationalising the PoT as a device for structuring, analysing and interpreting large-scale digital trace data. Whereas prior research has used PoT primarily as an analytical or retrospective framing tool, this paper develops a systematic, transparent procedure for empirically identifying translation moments as they unfold. By integrating PoT with CMM, the study extends the methodological repertoire of market studies and demonstrates how distributed agencing can be traced in real time on visual-first platforms. This approach provides new possibilities for examining digital market formation and sustainability activism.
This study investigates the role of information resources in experiences of personal transformation.
Semi-structured interviews drawing on Critical Incident Technique; directed content analysis of content; and matrix-based sequence analysis.
The most significant quality of information encounters that lead to a change in worldview or strongly held beliefs is the timely alignment between the type of information resource and the phase of transformation. Academic contexts are key information grounds for transformative experiences, but libraries, archives and museums (LAM) institutions did not arise as such. Both internal and external contexts impact receptivity to Transformative Information Encountering (TIE). Surprisingly, personal interactions need not be either close or sustained to have transformative impacts.
This study relies on participants' accounts of their transformative experiences and humans are notoriously unreliable when identifying their reasons for thinking or doing something. The diversity of the participant pool mitigates these limitations. Additional limitations include the number of information professionals and academics in the study, the lack of a full research team for intercoder reliability and the temporal context of these interviews given the outsized impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2016 US presidential election.
Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals interested in designing for transformation can engage in specific practices to meet this goal.
LAM institutions have currently unmet potential to impact experiences of personal transformation.

This paper advances understanding of knowledge integration across professional boundaries by examining how professionals coordinate action in two life‐ and time‐critical settings: aircraft maintenance and emergency healthcare. Building on established knowledge integration perspectives, the study investigates situations in which actors must establish a basis for action while knowledge claims remain uncertain, contested, or incomplete. Adopting a qualitative case study design that combines observations, interviews, and document analysis, the cases are analysed through the lens of knowledge integration theory, with particular attention to the processes of transfer, translation, transformation, and transcendence. The analysis shows how professionals coordinate action when available knowledge cannot immediately be fully integrated and identifies
transacting
as an approach through which actors compare, evaluate, and temporarily stabilise competing knowledge claims to establish provisional grounds for action. The study further introduces
organic boundaries
to describe temporary epistemic boundaries that emerge around specific artefacts, decisions, or uncertainties rather than predefined professional divisions. By conceptualising transacting as a complementary interactional process and extending boundary perspectives, the study explains how coordinated action becomes possible before shared understanding or transformed knowledge has fully developed in complex, high‐stakes environments.

This study investigates how formal references are transformed into architectural form and meaning. While previous studies have acknowledged the diversity of source domains in architecture, they often remain fragmented and lack a systematic framework that explains how such references are operated upon during design. This gap limits the ability to distinguish between the literal replication of recognizable forms and the deeper transformation of their conceptual, structural, and symbolic properties. In response, this research develops a Transformation-Based Formal Reference Framework (TFRF) that traces formal reference through six stages—source, interpretation, abstraction, transformation, architectural expression, and meaning production—with a feedback loop from received meaning back to interpretation. The contribution is therefore not a new classification of sources; classification by source domain (living organisms, cosmos and geographical formations, language, belief systems, precedent architecture, and human-made products) is retained only as the entry point of the process. Thirty-one architectural cases, selected through purposive sampling and independently double-coded (κ = 0.75 for abstraction and κ = 0.86 for transfer), are positioned within a two-dimensional matrix that crosses degree of abstraction (direct, analogy, abstraction) with type of transfer (form, structure, performance, symbol, space). The analysis suggests that source domain and transformation mechanism function as analytically distinct dimensions: one source can yield opposite mechanisms and distant sources can converge on the same one. The framework thereby reframes formal reference from a catalogue of inspirations into a navigable two-axis design space, offering a transferable analytical framework for understanding how architectural references become form and meaning.
