Abstract

The construction industry is undergoing rapid digital transformation through the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Building Information Modeling (BIM), digital twins, blockchain, and cloud-based information systems. While these technologies have significantly improved project monitoring, information management, and operational efficiency, their increasing integration has also introduced new challenges related to cybersecurity, privacy, data integrity, quality management, and sustainability. Existing studies predominantly address these technologies as independent solutions, resulting in fragmented approaches that fail to provide a comprehensive framework for secure and sustainable smart construction. This study proposes an integrated cybersecure and sustainable digital framework that combines IoT-enabled sensing, BIM-based information management, digital-twin technology, privacy-preserving authentication, zero-trust access control, blockchain-supported data provenance, digital inspection, intelligent quality management, sustainable material selection, and supply-chain resilience. The framework establishes a continuous information flow from physical construction activities to digital decision-support systems while ensuring secure access, trusted data exchange, and accountability. A multilayer architecture is developed to connect physical assets, sensing devices, digital models, cybersecurity mechanisms, inspection processes, sustainability assessment, and management decision-making within a unified Construction 4.0 environment. The framework is evaluated through scenario-based analysis considering cybersecurity, authentication, data integrity, quality management, operational performance, supply-chain resilience, and sustainability dimensions. The results indicate that integrating digital construction technologies with cybersecurity and sustainability mechanisms enhances information traceability, access control, quality monitoring, and decision-making capabilities. The study further demonstrates that secure identity management, zero-trust principles, and blockchain-supported provenance can strengthen trust in construction information systems, while digital inspection and sustainability-oriented procurement contribute to improved quality and resource efficiency. The proposed framework advances Construction 4.0 research by providing a holistic approach that bridges digitalization, cybersecurity, quality management, and sustainability. It offers both theoretical insights and practical guidance for developing secure, resilient, and sustainable smart construction environments capable of supporting future digital construction ecosystems.
