Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the strengths and weaknesses of online education related to teaching practices from the perspective of college students, with the aim of proposing elements that contribute to improving the conditions of this educational modality.   Theoretical Framework: This study analyzes the origin and development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and their impact on education, the importance of critical thinking in professional training and its relationship to online courses, along with assessment methods and digital literacy.   Method: The research was cross-sectional and used a mixed-methods approach with a predominantly qualitative focus, involving the administration of a questionnaire consisting of closed-ended items and one open-ended question to 713 students at a university. This study focuses on the open-ended question and the identification of categories of analysis.   Results and Discussion: The main results indicate that the most significant shortcomings identified were the long delays in assessment and feedback from instructors. Among the strengths were the instructional design of the courses, as well as the diversity of materials and communication media.   Research Implications: The results highlight the need for digital literacy and the consequent development of ICT-mediated educational processes that can contribute to the development of a more critical and proactive attitude, emphasizing the importance of understanding all aspects related to online education.   Originality/Value: This study contributes to the understanding of elements related to ICT and their introduction into the education sector.
