Sleep Duration and the Association Between Systemic Inflammatory Response Index and Depressive Symptoms Among Emerging Adults: Evidence from NHANES 2005-2023.

Abstract

ObjectiveThis study examined the association between the Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI) and depressive symptoms among emerging adults aged 18-25 years, with an emphasis on the indirect role of sleep duration.MethodThis cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2023. A total of 6563 participants with complete data on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), complete blood count parameters for SIRI calculation, and self-reported sleep duration were included. Depressive symptoms were defined as a PHQ-9 score ≥10. Weighted multivariable logistic regression, restricted cubic spline analysis, and bootstrap-based exploratory mediation analysis (n = 1000) were employed.ResultsOverall, 604 participants (9.2%) met the criteria for depressive symptoms. After full adjustment for covariates, SIRI demonstrated a significant positive association with depressive symptoms (Model 4: OR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.02-1.33, P = 0.03). Participants in the highest SIRI quartile (Q4) exhibited 33% higher odds of depressive symptoms compared to the lowest quartile (Q1) (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.09-1.61, P = 0.005). No significant nonlinearity was observed (P for nonlinearity = 0.066). Exploratory mediation analysis revealed a negative indirect effect through sleep duration (β = -0.009), accounting for approximately 6.2% of the total effect.ConclusionsHigher SIRI levels were associated with increased odds of depressive symptoms among emerging adults. Sleep duration played a modest suppressor role in this relationship, suggesting complex interactions between inflammation, sleep, and mental health warranting further investigation through prospective studies.

Associations of sleep duration variability and depressive symptoms with gastrointestinal disease among middle-aged and older adults

The relationship between variability in sleep duration and gastrointestinal disorders remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to examine this connection and evaluate the potential mediating influence of depressive symptoms on this association. This research utilized data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and Health and Retirement Study (HRS). The association between gastrointestinal diseases and changes in sleep duration was explored using quartile grouping, restricted cubic spline curves, subgroup analyses, and sensitivity analyses. The mediating effect of depressive symptoms was evaluated by using a mediation effect model. A total of 5570 participants from CHARLS and 2539 from HRS were included, of which 490 (8.80%) and 274 (10.79%), respectively, developed gastrointestinal disease. Greater sleep duration variability was linked to an increased risk of gastrointestinal disease, particularly among participants in the highest quartile (CHARLS: odds ratio = 1.43; HRS: odds ratio = 1.84). Restricted cubic spline analyses showed that, as sleep variability increased, the risk of gastrointestinal disease also increased in a linear manner, and depression was found to partially mediate this association by influencing the pathway between sleep variability and disease risk. This study finds that changes in sleep duration were linked to gastrointestinal diseases, with depression playing a mediating role. This suggests that changes in sleep duration and mental health may help to prevent gastrointestinal disturbances.

Associations of sleep duration and quality with cardiometabolic risk factors in US adults: Evidence from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey.

OBJECTIVES We examined the association between sleep duration and quality with cardiometabolic risk factors, assessed whether these associations varied by socioeconomic status, and identified prevalent risk factor combinations in those with poor sleep health. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 25,433 adults using the 2022 National Health Interview Survey data. Sleep health exposures included self-reported sleep duration (<7, 7-9, >9 h), sleep quality measures (frequency of feeling well rested, difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep), and a composite sleep health indicator. Cardiometabolic risk factors included overweight/obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. We examined the mean count of cardiometabolic risk factors (individual range: 0-4) and patterns of cardiometabolic risk factor combinations across sleep measures using Poisson regression with marginal standardization for covariates, accounting for the complex survey design. RESULTS Population-average cardiometabolic risk factor count was 9% higher among short sleepers, 15% to 20% higher across poor sleep quality measures, and 18% higher among those without healthy composite sleep compared with healthy reference groups. Associations between difficulty staying asleep and mean cardiometabolic risk factor count were stronger among those with lower SES (p-interaction ≤0.001) on the ratio scale. Poor sleep quality was associated with more severe CMRF combinations and patterns, while sleep duration showed heterogeneous associations across cardiometabolic outcomes. CONCLUSION Poor sleep quality and short sleep duration were associated with higher population-level cardiometabolic risk factor burden. Associations for difficulty staying asleep were stronger among individuals with lower socioeconomic status. Poor sleep quality was also associated with more severe cardiometabolic risk factor combinations, suggesting sleep quality may be a potential target for multimorbidity prevention.

A Study on the Depressive Symptoms and Life Satisfaction Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults in China Based on CHARLS 2020 Data

Background: Depressive symptoms have become a significant public health issue faced by middle-aged and older adults in China. Although previous studies have primarily focused on demographic and socioeconomic factors, the association between modifiable lifestyle behaviors and depressive symptoms still requires further investigation. Objective: To examine the associations between sleep duration, physical activity, digital participation, social participation, and depressive symptoms as well as life satisfaction among middle-aged and older adults in China. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS). Depressive symptoms were defined as CES-D-10 scores ≥10, with 13,576 individuals included in the analysis sample. Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) were estimated using modified Poisson regression, while ordinal logistic regression was employed to analyze life satisfaction. The analysis controlled for covariates such as demographics, socioeconomic status, and health status, and accounted for the complex sampling design. Results: The weighted prevalence of depressive symptoms was 44.5%. Sleep deprivation (<7 h/day) was significantly associated with elevated depressive symptoms (aPR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.33–1.68); participation in recreational activities was significantly associated with reduced depressive symptoms (aPR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.77–0.96); adequate physical activity was associated with a higher prevalence of elevated depressive symptoms (aPR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.04–1.32); watching videos (aPR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.76–0.99) and playing online games (aPR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.50–0.83) were significantly associated with reduced depressive symptoms; and overall internet use was correlated with lower life satisfaction (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.81–1.00). Women, rural residents, and low-income groups exhibited higher prevalence of elevated depressive symptoms. Conclusion: Sleep deprivation, as well as different types of social engagement, physical activity, and digital behavior, exhibit distinct associations with depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older adults. Behavioral intervention strategies targeting sleep hygiene, leisure activities, and tailored digital behaviors warrant further attention.

Associations of Physical Activity and Sleep with Depression, Anxiety, and Loneliness Among U.S. Adults: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction Physical activity, strength training, and sleep are important determinants of mental health. The authors of this study examined the associations of these lifestyle behaviors with emotional health outcomes among U.S. adults. Methods Authors conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2024 Health Information National Trends Survey® 7, a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults aged ≥18 years (N = 7278). Outcomes included depression (PHQ-2), anxiety (GAD-2), overall loneliness (PROMIS Social Isolation Short Form), social loneliness, and emotional loneliness. Predictors included moderate-intensity physical activity (≥150 min/week), strength training (≥2 days/week), and weekday and weekend sleep duration. Survey-weighted logistic and multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed, adjusting for sociodemographic and health-related covariates. Results Most respondents screened negative for depression (79.4%) and anxiety (78.4%), and 61.6% reported low loneliness. Most respondents did not meet the recommended levels of moderate-intensity physical activity (56.6%) or strength training (55.4%). In adjusted analyses, meeting strength-training guidelines was associated with lower odds of depression (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.53–0.95) and loneliness (aOR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.43–0.98). Moderate-intensity physical activity was not independently associated with emotional health outcomes. Obtaining the recommended 7–9 hours of weekend sleep was associated with lower odds of depression, anxiety, and loneliness, whereas obtaining the recommended weekday sleep duration was associated with lower social and emotional loneliness. Conclusions Strength training and adequate sleep were independently associated with better emotional health among U.S. adults. These findings support muscle-strengthening activities and healthy sleep habits as potential targets for mental health promotion.
