Abstract

The Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method is widely adopted in commercial software solvers due to its stability and computational efficiency. However, conventional SIMP approaches still face limitations when addressing complex structures subject to specific constraints. This paper proposes an improved SIMP method that integrates design experience with auxiliary optimization strategies, such as minimum size control and manufacturing constraints. By incorporating filtering techniques—including density and sensitivity filtering—the method effectively mitigates the checkerboard effect and mesh dependency, generating smooth structures that satisfy manufacturing requirements like minimum dimension limits. The feasibility of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a cantilever beam case study. Additionally, the method is applied to the topology optimization of an aerospace integrated frame structure, achieving a 26% weight reduction. The proposed improved SIMP method significantly enhances the engineering applicability of optimization results, providing ideal conceptual designs tailored for advanced manufacturing technologies, particularly additive manufacturing (e.g., 3D printing).
