Abstract

Accelerated demographic aging, coupled with rising mental disorders and social isolation among older adults in urban peripheries, demands multifaceted health promotion. Community physical exercise programs rooted in Lifestyle Medicine emerge as key allies. This study examined the link between adherence to the free MOVASE Project—physical activities at Parque Lebret, Guarus (Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ) —and biopsychosocial metrics in 25 adults aged ≥40. Quantitative analytical pre-post design used individual microdata on ordinal scales (1-5): physical (activity, disposition, perceived health), emotional (anxiety, loneliness, depression), social (belonging, friendships). Frequencies, means, and inference via chi-square (χ²), paired t-test, Wilcoxon (p<0.05; Cramér’s V for effect) were applied. Approved by Ethics Committee (opinion 7.635.409/CAAE not specified). All domains improved significantly (p<0.05; moderate-to-strong effects): physical activity 20%-96% (χ²≈29.1; V=0.76); disposition 32%-100%; general health 40%-92%; anxiety 16%-80%; loneliness 44%-84%; depression 32%-84%; belonging 36%-100%; friendships 36%-100%. MOVASE proves a viable biopsychosocial strategy for active aging in unequal settings, warranting territorial scaling.

PHYSICAL EXERCISE PROGRAMS AS A HEALTH PROMOTION STRATEGY IN SOCIAL ISOLATION CONTEXTS: LESSONS FROM THE COVID‑19 PANDEMIC

The COVID‑19 pandemic imposed social distancing measures that negatively affected physical and mental health, increasing sedentary behavior and impairing quality of life (QoL). Regular physical exercise has been recommended as a coping strategy, but few studies have evaluated remote programs implemented during this period. The aim was to evaluate the effect of a remote physical exercise program on the QoL of sedentary adults participating in a university extension project during the pandemic. This is a longitudinal, descriptive, comparative study with 20 volunteers (19 women, 1 man; mean age 45.6±5.6 years) from the Physical Activity in Health Promotion Project at the Federal University of Acre. Physical activity level was assessed by the IPAC (short version VIII) and QoL by the WHOQOL‑BREF, applied before and after six months of intervention. The program consisted of remote classes (40‑60 min, five times/week) with aerobic, resistance, stretching and flexibility exercises, using alternative materials. Statistical analysis used paired t‑test (α=0.05). Significant improvements were observed in Overall Quality of Life (from 3.25±0.85 to 3.75±0.79; p=0.008) and Physical Domain (from 3.25±0.64 to 3.55±0.67; p=0.010). Psychological, social and environmental domains, as well as health satisfaction, showed no statistically significant differences. The remote exercise program contributed to improving overall QoL and physical domain, suggesting that such interventions can be effective strategies to mitigate the effects of social isolation on health. Further studies with control groups and in‑person settings are recommended.

Physical Activity, Social Support, and Psychological Well-Being in University Students: Implications for Health Promotion and Preventive Rehabilitation

Physical activity and social support are theoretically recognized as protective factors against psychological disorders and are central components of health promotion and pre-ventive rehabilitation frameworks. However, in students who are actively engaged in sports-based Student Activity Units (UKM), their direct relationship with psychological well-being has not been consistently reported. This study aims to analyze the effect of physical activity and social support on quality of life (QoL) and anxiety in student mem-bers of UKM sports, with implications for lifestyle medicine and functional health promo-tion. This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 65 active student members of UKM sports at Universitas Pendidikan Indone-sia, selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Physical activity was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF), social support using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), quality of life using the WHOQOL-BREF, and anxiety using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Hypothesis testing was performed using bootstrap regression analysis (1,000 resamplings; 95% BCa confidence intervals). The results showed that physical activity and social support did not have a statistically significant direct effect on QoL or anxiety (p > 0.05). Despite the positive directional trend between physical activity and QoL and a nega-tive trend toward anxiety, confidence intervals uniformly encompassed zero. These find-ings suggest that in a physically active student population, other factors including aca-demic stress, performance demands, burnout, coping strategies, and emotional regulation may mediate or moderate psychological well-being outcomes. From a preventive rehabili-tation and health promotion perspective, these results underscore the importance of com-prehensive, multidimensional interventions beyond exercise prescription alone, integrat-ing psychosocial support, stress management, and lifestyle medicine approaches to opti-mize functional health among university students

Effect of telehealth exercise program on older adults’ health during COVID-19 pandemic

Purpose: Social distancing negatively interferes in physical and mental health of the older population, which can be manage by Telehealth Exercise Program (ThEP). The objective was to evaluate the effect of a physical exercise program mediated by telehealth on levels of physical activity, depressive symptoms, and quality of life among community-dwelling older adults during pandemic. Methods: Quasi-experimental study included twenty-four participants, aged between 60 and 87 years. The instruments used were the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, the Geriatric Depression Scale, the WHOQoL-bref, and the WHOQoL-old. The ThEP was made with videos of guidelines for performing home-based physical exercises. The evaluations included: baseline, follow-up 1 (after 15 weeks), follow-up 2 (after 5 weeks from the end of ThEP), and fol-low-up 3 (after 18 weeks from the end of ThEP). Descriptive and median comparison analysis were performed. Results: Physical activity increased along follow-ups. Depressive symptoms decrease significantly during the period, while quality of life showed significant gains in the physical domain (p = 0.007), and maintenance of the other domains. Conclusion: ThEP improves level of physical activity, decreases depressive symptoms, and maintains a good quality of life.

Moderate Vigorous Physical Activity for Mental Health in Sedentary Middle-Aged Adults

Findings indicate MVPA consistent with the U.S. PA Guidelines in sedentary middle-aged adults may decrease depression, HbA1c, and CVD risk and should be a priority amongst providers.

Physical activity and wellbeing among pre-service helping professionals: the role of lifestyle in a Hungarian university sample

Physical activity is widely assumed to contribute to psychological wellbeing; however, this relationship may reflect broader lifestyle patterns rather than a direct causal effect. This cross-sectional study examined physical activity levels, subjective wellbeing, and their predictors in a sample of 1,109 pre-service students enrolled in helping-profession programs (special education, infant and early childhood education, pre-school education, and social education) at the University of Debrecen, Hungary. Data were collected using an online questionnaire assessing physical activity habits, wellbeing, dietary behavior, sleep, and motivational factors. Hierarchical multiple regression models were used to analyze predictors of weekly physical activity and wellbeing. Physical activity did not independently predict wellbeing after lifestyle variables were controlled. Instead, wellbeing was predicted by daily vegetable consumption, enjoyment of university physical education, motivator count, sleep adequacy, financial situation, and attention to healthy eating. Physical activity volume was predicted by perceived importance of physical activity, work intensity, and barrier count. Part-time students who combined work and study reported higher physical activity levels and better wellbeing than full-time students. The findings suggest that wellbeing in this population is associated more strongly with coherent lifestyle patterns than with physical activity volume alone.
