Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of digital literacy in strengthening global citizenship competencies among Social Studies Education students in higher education. In the era of rapid digital transformation, students are required not only to master technological skills but also to develop critical thinking, intercultural understanding, social responsibility, and active participation in addressing global issues. This research employed a quantitative approach using a survey design involving 120 undergraduate students enrolled in Social Studies Education programs at several universities in Indonesia. Data were collected through structured questionnaires measuring digital literacy and global citizenship competencies. The instruments were validated through expert judgment and pilot testing prior to implementation. Data analysis techniques included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and simple linear regression to examine the relationship between the variables. The findings revealed that students generally demonstrated moderate to high levels of digital literacy, particularly in information access and communication skills. The results also indicated a significant positive relationship between digital literacy and global citizenship competencies (r = 0.678, p < 0.001). Furthermore, digital literacy was found to contribute 46.0% to the enhancement of global citizenship competencies (R² = 0.460), suggesting that students with stronger digital literacy skills tend to exhibit higher levels of global awareness, respect for cultural diversity, civic engagement, and responsible digital behavior. These findings highlight the importance of integrating digital literacy practices into Social Studies Education curricula to prepare students to become competent and responsible global citizens in the digital era.
