Preparation, Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity of Fe(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) Complexes of Hydroxamic Acid Derivatives
Abstract
At the present work Potassium 5-Chlorosalicylhydroxamate and its complexes Fe (II), Co (II) and Cu (II) were studied. Firstly 5-chlorosalicylhydroxamic acid had been prepared by the reaction of 5-chlorosalicylate and free hydoxyamine and was characterized by its melting point (>200℃), FT IR showed characteristic spectral band at 3324 cm–1 due to (N-O) stretching frequency and at 1626 cm–1 due to (C=O) stretching frequency. The Proton NMR showed spectrum show singlets at around 11.60 δ ppm and 12.40 δ ppm, which may be assigned to ‒NH and phenolic ‒OH of salicylhydroxamate group which show the linkage of 5-chlorosalicylhydroxamate group through oxygen atoms of carbonyl and hydroxylamine group. The data from spectral studies suggested that the ligand act as a neutral bidentate ligand [O, O] ligand involving the hydroxamate (‒NHO) and carbonyl oxygens, giving rise to penta-coordinated metal complexes in [M(HL)Cl2]K and hexa-coordinated in [M(HL)2Cl2]K. The antibacterial and anti-fungal of compounds was tested against bacterial strains- Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis using agar well diffusion method and fungal strains- Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Trichoderma harzianum. Cycloheximide were used as the standard antifungal agents whereas Chloramphenicol was used in the technique as the standard antibacterial agent. Compound (1d); [Co(HL)2Cl2]K showed good antibacterial activity i.e 33 mm and 24 mm against P. aeruginosa and B. subtilis and good antifungal activity i.e. 28 mm against S. sclerotonia and T. harzianum.
