Lifelong Learning in the Context of Digital Transformation: The Changing Role of Universities

Abstract
Digital transformation is reshaping the conditions under which universities organize education, recognize learning, and engage with society. Although higher education has traditionally focused on degree programmes undertaken during early adulthood, contemporary technological and social changes require educational opportunities across the life course. This conceptual article examines the relationship between digital transformation, lifelong learning, and the changing role of universities. Drawing on selected scholarly publications and international policy documents, it argues that meaningful transformation requires more than the adoption of digital platforms. Universities need coordinated institutional arrangements that support flexible participation, recognition of prior learning, inclusive pedagogy, ethical technological practices, and sustained community engagement. The article proposes a framework comprising five interconnected dimensions: access, support, recognition, governance, and public value. It also examines tensions between employability and broader educational purposes, flexibility and credential fragmentation, and technological personalization and learner autonomy.
