Abstract
Cactus Echinocereus cinerascens is a cactus of ecological and cultural importance in the Mexican Plateau; however, fundamental knowledge regarding its seed germination remains scarce. This study evaluated germination response under different temperatures (10, 18, 25, and 30 °C) and water potentials (well-hydrated, -0.5, -1.0, and -1.5 MPa), using filter paper as substrate. Germination was recorded over time, and germination parameters were analyzed. The seeds achieved germination percentages exceeding 95 % under well-hydrated conditions at 18 and 25 °C within 10 to 17 days. In contrast, no germination was recorded at 10 °C, as well as at 30 °C under moisture restriction (-0.5 to -1.5 MPa). Progressive substrate dehydration significantly reduced the germination percentage and increased the time to the onset of germination and time to 50% germination, with median values falling below 20% and exceeding 15 and 20 days, respectively, at -1.5 MPa. These effects were exacerbated when combined with higher temperatures. Furthermore, temperature and hydration levels that deviate from optimal conditions increased variability in germination variables suggesting a bet-hedging strategy. Seed germination of E. cinerascens is remarkable under temperature and moisture levels but dehydration and unfavorable temperatures inhibit it. Sexual propagation of this species, based on seed germination, is a viable method.
Pachypodium mikea Lüthy (Apocynaceae) is a xerophytic species endemic to southwestern Madagascar whose germination ecology remains poorly documented. This study aimed to characterize its seeds and evaluate the effects of different pre-germination treatments under nursery conditions. A total of 400 seeds were subjected...

Abstract This study explores the propagation of Frangula sphaerosperma, a species relevant for ecological restoration, by characterizing its seed and biometric traits (length, width, and shape indices) and evaluating germination at 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C. Germination percentage, germination speed index, average germinati...

Cumin (
Cuminum cyminum
L.) establishment in arid and semi-arid systems can be limited during germination by thermal and saline stress, yet accession-level variation remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to quantify germination and early-vigor responses of nine cumin accessions to temperature and NaCl and...

The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana can associate with plants and promote growth, but these effects may vary with temperature. This study evaluated the effects of B. bassiana on germination and early growth of red onion (Allium cepa L.) at 22, 28, and 34 °C. Bulbs were soaked for 3 h in 10^8 conidia/mL or st...

Seeds exhibited a rapid triphasic imbibition pattern, indicating substantial water permeability under freshly harvested conditions, although the possibility of partial physical dormancy developing during drying and storage cannot be completely excluded.

Seed germination is critical for successful restoration in degraded desert ecosystems. This study aimed to determine thermal requirements and tolerance limits to water and salt stress of four key forage species: Aristida mendocina, Digitaria californica, Pappophorum caespitosum, and Leptochloa crinita. Controlled labor...
