Geomorphological indication of lateral growth in three anticlines, Kurdistan Region, Iraq

Sep 2026 · Scientific Reports · 0 citations

Abstract

The Iraqi Kurdistan Region (KRI) is characterized by tectonic activity due to its location in the northern and northeastern parts of Iraq, situated within the northeastern part of the Arabian Plate. The ongoing collision between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates along a convergent boundary has led to the development of numerous anticlines with varying shapes and sizes. This study focuses on three specific anticlines—Qara Boutaq, Korek, and Mateen—located in distinct tectonic zones (Low Folded, High Folded, and Imbricate, respectively). Our objective is to determine whether these anticlines exhibit lateral growth or otherwise. To achieve this, we employed satellite imagery to identify structural and geomorphological features associated with lateral expansion; accordingly, we have recognised 7 different indications, which include en-echelon plunge, water gaps, wind gaps, abandoned alluvial fans, radial valleys, axial valleys, fork-shaped valleys, and inclined valleys. Our findings indicate that all three studied anticlines indeed demonstrate lateral growth.

Characterizing the Forearc Basement and Subducting Structures of the Northern Ecuadorian Margin

We present 2D P‐wave velocity (Vp) models from the northern Ecuadorian subduction zone, north of the Carnegie Ridge. Data were collected during the HIPER2 3D wide‐angle seismic experiment, both onshore and offshore. Key seismic profiles were manually picked to determine P‐wave first‐arrival times, which were used for a...

Miocene to Quaternary Tectonostratigraphic Evolution of the Northern Section of the Burdur‐Fethiye Shear Zone, South‐Western Türkiye

The Burdur‐Fethiye Shear Zone (BFSZ) is a deformation zone accommodating strain partitioning between extensional and compressional domains in south‐western Türkiye. It exhibits a broad, linear geometry with a width of ~75–90 km and extends from Şuhut‐Çay to Sarıgerme‐Gelemiş onshore, continuing offshore toward the Pl...

Flexural bulges and foredeep basins: Dynamic tectonic control on shifting depocentres and condensed facies, Upper Cretaceous (Santonian), Western Canada Foreland Basin

Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) shallow‐marine mudstone of the Puskwaskau Formation fills the foredeep of the Western Canada Foreland Basin and was deposited on a near‐planar, wave‐graded ramp. These strata span ~2.3 myr and form an 800‐km‐long prismatic wedge that, perpendicular to the Rocky Mountain Cordillera, thins fr...
