Using AI to Support Teaching and Learning of Multiword Sequences

Aug 2026 · JALT Postconference Publication · Vol 2025, pp. 7 · 0 citations

Abstract

Multiword sequences (MWSs) – combinations of words that frequently recur together – are a key component of L2 proficiency and oral fluency (Paquot, 2019; Tavakoli & Uchihara, 2020). Recent work shows that the density and length of MWSs and lexical bundles strongly influence listener‑based ratings of fluency (Brown et al., 2023; Hougham et al., 2023; Takizawa & Suzuki, 2025). Building on this research, and on proposals for principled GenAI use (Hougham & Higginbotham, 2024) and systematic vocabulary and multiword‑item instruction (Nakata & Suzuki, 2022), this paper reports an exploratory use of GenAI chatbots in a university course to emphasize MWSs as an essential part of L2 vocabulary acquisition. It outlines GenAI‑mediated tasks for teaching idioms, incongruent collocations, and academic multiword sequences, and discusses perceived benefits, drawbacks, and challenges. It also offers ideas for using GenAI to support learners’ MWS development while maintaining learner agency and academic integrity.

Making alliterative collocations memorable

Collocations are a key component of second language (L2) mastery. Yet, their acquisition poses major challenges to L2 learners. One potential solution to this difficulty is employing the mnemonic effect of alliteration (e.g., pr ofessional pr actice ). In the present study, 230 Japanese EFL university st...

Acquiring Collocations Through Multimodal Flashcards

Collocations are commonly used, non-idiomatic sequences of words that tend to be sequenced together such as “reach a consensus” or “be widely adopted.” Many studies have signified the prevalence of these chunks of language in everyday English (e.g., Goulart, 2019), suggesting their importance in English learning. While...

AI-assisted speaking in ELT: a bibliometric mapping of research gaps and a future research agenda (2023–2026)

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into English Language Teaching (ELT) has generated a fragmented research landscape regarding AI-assisted speaking instruction. While individual studies report promising outcomes for chatbots and automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems, the field lacks a systemati...

A Study on Generative AI-Assisted Adaptation Strategies for High School English Reading Texts

The findings reveal that both experts and ChatGPT rely most heavily on content-level adaptation, while experts engage least in syntactic adaptation and ChatGPT in lexical adaptation, and the importance of teacher–AI collaboration in text adaptation is highlighted.

Language Learners Select Dictionaries or AI Tools Depending on the Task

The present study revisits the impact of the introduction of AI tools on dictionary use, aiming to further explore which lexical resources English majors tend to use for a broader range of language-related tasks. From April to June 2025, 179 students from two large public Polish universities, University of Warmia and M...

Enhancing Vocabulary and Spelling Accuracy through AI-Generated Stories by Integrating Dictation Activities for A2-Level EFL Learners

This study evaluated the pedagogical and affective impact of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI)-generated contextualized stories into dictation activities for secondary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Traditional dictation exercises often use static, decontextualized texts that lead to learner mon...
