Abstract

On February 6, 2024, the news of Gagik Ginosyan’s death sent shockwaves through Armenia and Armenian diaspora communities, already grappling with the aftermath of the 2020 44-day war. For many, his passing felt like another blow in the ongoing losses suffered in Artsakh, where the individual and the homeland are inseparably linked. Ginosyan was a man who, having been at the epicenter of the last thirty-year war in Artsakh, had experienced both victory and defeat, yet managed to find resilience in the post-2020 era, emerging as a symbol of determination for many. Consequently, his death was seen as a confirmation of defeat and irreplaceable losses, leaving behind a sense of orphanhood for the Motherland and its people. Despite the profound sorrow felt by many, Ginosyan’s death did not lead to traditional mourning. Instead, it sparked expressions of anger and initiated a discourse of social renewal and continued struggle. Thus, Ginosyan’s funeral took on a somewhat festive tone.
