Abstract
Layer-structured transition metal oxides show great potential in alkali metal ion batteries, their structural phase transitions, however, lead to mechanical disintegration, resulting in capacity decay and severely limiting the lifespan. Traditional modification strategies struggle to suppress phase transitions at their thermodynamic root cause, while the ideal solid-solution reaction paradigm faces the challenge of difficult-to-control electronic structures. A novel physical paradigm was proposed that drives the solid-solution-dominated reaction by reshaping the electronic state through a quenching process herein. A locally disordered layered oxide, K0.5(Mn0.85Fe0.1Ti0.05)0.99(VTMBi)0.01O2 (KMFTB), was constructed through a quenching-assisted vacancy-mediated boron (B) incorporation process, in which TM vacancies (VTM) capture Bi and reconstruct the local coordination into stable [BO4] units. Experiments and theoretical calculations confirm that the synergistic interaction between the locally disordered structure and strong B─O bonds not only stabilizes the transition metal framework through the pinning effect, but also induces a significant band broadening and electronic delocalization. This electronic structure restructuring enables KMFTB to suppress destructive phase transitions and achieve a highly reversible solid-solution-dominated reaction pathway, providing profound theoretical insights for the rational design of high-performance cathode materials.
Lithium-rich cathodes boast a large specific capacity due to the presence of excess lithium per transition metal. However, making use of that excess Li drives the cathodes to unusually high formal oxidation states, often triggering unwanted side reactions, typically signaled by gas release and commonly associated with...

Developing sustainable and robust proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H-SOFCs) requires overcoming the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and degradation of traditional rare-earth-containing perovskite cathodes. To address this, we propose a rare-earth-free metal-cation-deficient spinel structure to modul...

Solid polymer electrolytes hold great promise for high-energy-density lithium metal batteries, yet their practical implementation is still hindered by sluggish room-temperature Li+ transport and insufficient high-voltage tolerance (i.e., unstable above 4.3 V) especially when coupled with Ni-rich layered cathodes. Herei...

Precise synthesis of multi-component layered oxides via conventional solid-state routes remains a fundamental challenge, often constrained by the disparate reaction windows and mass transport kinetics of heterogeneous precursors. In this study, leveraging the close topological relationship between spinel and layered ox...
P2-type layered transition metal (TM) oxides have emerged as promising cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their intrinsic air stability and open prismatic diffusion pathways. However, at moderate (de)sodiation, severe structural breakdown and performance failure associated with the intra-partic...
