Abstract

The study examined the relationship between organizational climate and innovative behaviour of small businesses in Rivers State, Nigeria. Specifically, it investigated how organizational climate influences the three dimensions of innovative behaviour - idea generation, idea championing, and idea implementation. Guided by the positivist philosophical paradigm, the study adopted a crosssectional research design and collected quantitative data from 298 respondents comprising owners, managers, and supervisors of 85 packaged water companies selected from 107 registered firms. A census approach ensured full coverage of the accessible population, while data were obtained using structured questionnaires on a 5-point Likert scale. The instruments demonstrated strong validity and reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.70 across all constructs. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed a strong and positive relationship between organizational climate and idea generation (r = 0.768, p < 0.05), a moderate positive relationship with idea championing (r = 0.435, p < 0.05), and a weaker yet significant positive correlation with idea implementation (r = 0.326, p < 0.05). The study concluded that a supportive and inclusive organizational climate significantly enhances innovative behaviour among employees, particularly their capacity to generate and promote new ideas. It recommended that management of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should foster open communication and psychological safety to encourage idea generation, establish reward systems and mentorship structures to promote idea championing, and provide resource and managerial support for effective idea implementation. These practical measures can help SMEs build innovation-driven cultures essential for competitiveness and sustainable growth in today’s dynamic business environment.
