Abstract
The optimum shape design algorithm presented formulates the shape optimization problem by treating the nodal coordinates of thin-walled sections. The displacement, normal, and shear stress limitations are considered design constraints, while the objective function minimizes weight. The effect of warping is considered in the computation of the bending and shear stresses under the external loads. The sectional and sectorial properties of a thin-walled section are computed by utilizing nodal coordinates. Two soft computing techniques, the enhanced artificial bee colony (eABC) and population-based beetle's antenna search (pbBAS) algorithms, are employed to determine the solution of the optimum shape design problem.
This paper focuses on optimal design problems in the context of the Kirchhoff‐Love model for pure bending of a thin, solid, symmetric plate under a transverse load. The objective is to simultaneously determine the optimal outer shape of the domain and the distribution of two isotropic materials within the domain in o...

This paper presents a comparative study of compliant mechanisms generated using a robust topology optimization technique involving design-dependent pressure loads. Design domains are parameterized using standard and higher-order quadrilateral elements. Both eroded and blueprint configurations are considered. A min-max...
Perforated plates under external loads produce stress concentration around the holes which endangers the operation of structures. Various measures are used to enhance the holes, wherein hole shape optimization is a more economical method that remarkably adjusts the stress state. The optimization of an opening near a fi...

Steel plate girders benefit from transverse stiffeners, which reduce the web length along the span and enhance shear resistance. They also mitigate web buckling by providing lateral support to the web and anchoring the axial compression induced by the tension field action. According to EN 1993‐1‐5:2024, the design of t...

Morphing-wing structures require an optimal balance among large deformation capability, out-of-plane load bearing, and low structural mass while eliminating parasitic transverse warping. This study presents a gradient-tailoring optimization framework for a four-pointed star-shaped zero-Poisson’s-ratio honeycomb core ap...

An alternative design method, capable of predicting the local buckling capacity of thin‐walled steel cross‐sections of arbitrary shape, is presented. Unlike currently codified approaches (i.e. the Effective Width Method and the Direct Strength Method) which are based on empirical curve‐fitted equations, the new approac...
