Results confirm the pathogenicity of Pym 25/123 and Pym 25/125 and identify them as P. arrhenomanes causing maize feeder‐root rot in Argentina, the first report of P. arrhenomanes causing maize feeder‐root rot in Argentina.
Abstract
Zea mays
L. is one of the most important cereal crops in Argentina. In this study, ten isolates were recovered from symptomatic maize plants and rhizosphere soil collected in Pergamino, Argentina and preliminarily identified as
Pythium
spp. based on cultural and morphological characteristics. Two isolates (Pym 25/123 and Pym 25/125) were selected for detailed morphological and molecular characterisation using the ITS region and COI gene, and for pathogenicity assays on maize and sorghum. Their morphology was consistent with
Pythium arrhenomanes
, and ITS and COI sequences showed 99% identity with reference strain BR606. Phylogenetic analysis of concatenated ITS and COI sequences further supported their identification as
P. arrhenomanes
. In vitro assays showed a mean Disease Index of 0.62 for both isolates. In vivo, neither seedling death nor severe damping‐off was observed; however, both isolates significantly reduced root development in maize and sorghum compared with non‐inoculated controls. Re‐isolation from symptomatic roots fulfilled Koch's postulates. These results confirm the pathogenicity of Pym 25/123 and Pym 25/125 and identify them as
P. arrhenomanes
Drechs. To our knowledge, this is the first report of
P. arrhenomanes
causing maize feeder‐root rot in Argentina.
Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is an emerging crop in Bangladesh valued for its medicinal properties and economic significance. In March 2024, target spot-like symptoms were observed in an experimental chia field (24.75° N, 90.50° E) at Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, with disease incidence ra...

Species within the genus Phytopythium have recently been recognized as significant soilborne pathogens impacting various crops globally. However, their occurrence and pathogenicity in sweet cherry (Prunus avium) have not been studied in Chile before. This study aimed to identify Phytopythium isolates associated with ro...

Biological characterization demonstrated that the pathogen achieved optimal mycelial growth at 28 °C on PDA medium, with maximal mycelial growth obtained at pH 8 and pH 9, which were not significantly different among all tested media; among all tested media, malt extract agar was the optimum medium for mycelial growth.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is severely affected by banded leaf and sheath blight caused by Rhizoctonia solani, particularly under warm and humid agroecological conditions. The present study was conducted to isolate and characterize antagonistic plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria from maize rhizosphere soils of Eastern Uttar...
