Reimagining Blended and Hybrid Learning in Higher Education: Opportunities and Challenges in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence

2026 · Mizoram Educational Journal · 0 citations

Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping higher education by expanding the possibilities of blended and hybrid learning. Its ability to support personalized instruction, intelligent tutoring, automated content creation, adaptive assessment, and accessible learning has introduced new opportunities for enhancing both teaching and learning. This paper examines the conceptual foundations of blended and hybrid learning and explores how GenAI is redefining these instructional approaches. It further analyses the pedagogical, ethical, and institutional challenges associated with GenAI, including issues of academic integrity, data privacy, algorithmic bias, faculty preparedness, and the digital divide. Particular attention is given to the Indian higher education context through an examination of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the initiatives of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The paper contends that the effective integration of GenAI depends on balancing technological innovation with sound pedagogy, ethical governance, institutional readiness, and continuous professional development. It concludes that, when implemented responsibly, GenAI can contribute significantly to the development of inclusive, resilient, and future-ready higher education systems.
