Smart Mentor: An RFID-Based Intelligent System with Voice Alerts and 4G Emergency Communication
Abstract
Students frequently forget essential academic materials, leading to reduced academic performance and increased parental concern. Additionally, ensuring student safety during emergencies remains a critical challenge. This paper presents Smart Mentor, an RFID-based intelligent system that integrates RFID technology (MFRC522, 13.56 MHz), a DS3231 Real-Time Clock (RTC) with ±2 minutes/year accuracy, DFPlayer Mini voice alert modules, and an A7670C 4G LTE GSM module to assist students in managing academic schedules and improving personal safety. The system automatically detects the presence or absence of required books by comparing scanned RFID tag UIDs against a day-specific digital timetable. A three-stage anti-collision mechanism (power cycling, dynamic threshold adjustment, and UID deduplication) enables reliable detection of 15+ tagged books. Experimental validation using a working prototype demonstrates 97.8% detection accuracy, 45 ms average tag detection time, and 3.2 second emergency SMS dispatch via 4G LTE. The system achieves 12-14 hours of battery life on a 7.4V 3000mAh Li-ion power supply with LM2596 regulation and 1000µF bulk capacitance for GSM burst handling. Unlike existing RFID-based smart bag systems that lack voice feedback or rely on outdated 2G/3G networks, the proposed solution provides real-time voice alerts, RTC-synchronized timetable verification, and a hardware panic button with ¡100 ms interrupt response time. The system is cost-effective, user-friendly, and suitable for real-time deployment in smart education environments.
