The impact of environmental activities on the formation of civic identity among high school students
Abstract
The article substantiates the relevance of fostering civic identity among senior high school students within the framework of strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities. It argues that the formation of civic identity should be grounded in an equitable dialogue with all ethnic groups and peoples residing in Ukraine, aiming to consolidate the Ukrainian nation and create favorable conditions for their development. The study provides a theoretical rationale for leveraging the educational potential of extracurricular activities, alongside developing and implementing a learner-centered methodology for fostering civic identity in high school students. It characterizes the positive impact of student participation in diverse environmental initiatives aimed at protecting, researching, and restoring the environment. Through these activities, students actively internalize the role of a conscious citizen — a concept that today demands not only an understanding of rights and responsibilities but also a profound emotional connection to one’s community. Additionally, the paper analyzes the results of a survey focused on “Developing an Empathetic Educational Environment in Schools”, conducted in May 2026 as part of an applied research project titled “Development of Green Skills Among Learners in the Educational Environment of the Institution”. The research findings hold significant practical value and can be utilized to enhance the curriculum and organize extracurricular activities aimed at shaping the civic identity of high school students.
