Solute Redistribution Assisted Dual‐Gradient Structure With Superior Strength–Ductility Balance in Mg–Zn–Gd Alloy

Abstract

Heterogeneous structures have demonstrated great potential for overcoming the long‐standing strength–ductility trade‐off in metallic materials. In this study, a novel dual‐gradient structure, characterized by gradients in both grain size and precipitate distribution, was successfully constructed in an Mg–2Zn–0.8Gd (wt%) alloy sheet via sliding friction treatment (SFT). Severe plastic deformation arouses pronounced precipitate redistribution within the SFTed region, which can be divided into three successive and interrelated processes, namely mechanically induced precipitate dissolution, solute diffusion, and reprecipitation. The SFTed Mg–2Zn–0.8Gd (wt%) alloy exhibits a yield strength of 242 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 330 MPa, and a tensile elongation of 18.1%. Compared with the homogeneous counterpart, the gradient‐structured alloy exhibits a significantly alleviated strength–ductility competitive relationship. The improved mechanical performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic contributions of grain refinement, dislocation strengthening, precipitate strengthening, and hetero‐deformation‐induced (HDI) strengthening. These findings provide new insights into the microstructural design of heterostructured Mg alloys and offer an effective strategy for tailoring their mechanical properties.

Modulating Hierarchical Microstructure to Enhance Strength–Ductility Synergy in an Additively Manufactured Zinc‐Magnesium Alloy via Static Magnetic Field

Additive manufacturing of zinc‐magnesium (Zn‐Mg) alloys via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has gained significant recognition as a promising candidate for bone repair. However, the presence of coarse yet brittle eutectic phases in the fabricated Zn‐Mg alloys tends to induce premature stress concentration and resultan...

Nonequilibrium Precipitation Pathway Enabling Direct δ‐phase Formation and Enhanced Cryogenic Strength–Ductility in an Additively Manufactured Multi‐Principal‐Element Alloy

Overcoming the strength–ductility trade‐off in face‐centered cubic (FCC) multi‐principal element alloys (MPEAs), particularly at cryogenic temperatures, remains a significant challenge. Here, a laser powder bed fusion (LPBF)–enabled direct aging strategy is employed to modify the precipitation behavior in a Ni 53...

Co-design of grain heterogeneity and precipitate hierarchy for strength-ductility-conductivity synergy in a conductive Cu alloy

In this work, a coupled multiscale microstructural design strategy was developed for a Cu-5Ni-0.7Si-0.4Al alloy by integrating partial recrystallization-induced grain heterogeneity with hierarchical precipitation. Partial recrystallization produced heterogeneous grains spanning the micrometer to submicrometer scale, wh...
