INCLUSIVE EDUCATION AND GENDER JUSTICE: AN ANALYSIS OF THE NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY 2020

Sep 2026 · Interdisciplinary Perspectives of Education · 0 citations

Abstract

Inclusive education and gender justice are essential for developing an equitable, democratic, and sustainable education system. In India, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks an important shift in educational policy by placing greater emphasis on equity, inclusion, accessibility, quality, and gender sensitivity at all levels of education. The policy recognizes that educational inequality is closely associated with social, economic, cultural, and gender-based disadvantages and therefore calls for targeted interventions to support learners from marginalized groups. The paper discusses important provisions of NEP 2020, including the Gender Inclusion Fund, improvement of school infrastructure, scholarships and financial support, gender-sensitive pedagogy, community participation, flexible learning opportunities, and measures for supporting disadvantaged learners. The study also identifies persistent challenges such as gender discrimination, poverty, socio-cultural restrictions, early marriage, child labour, safety concerns, inadequate infrastructure, digital inequality, and limited employment opportunities. The analysis suggests that NEP 2020 provides a comprehensive policy framework for reducing gender disparities and strengthening inclusive education. However, policy provisions alone cannot ensure meaningful change. Effective implementation, adequate financial resources, teacher preparation, community participation, regular monitoring, and coordination among different stakeholders are necessary to translate policy objectives into sustainable educational outcomes.
