Abstract

Environmental variability is a defining feature of natural ecosystems, yet many theories of ecological stability assume static environments. Here, we develop an analytical framework for local stability in complex ecological communities subjected to periodic environmental forcing. We show that, in slowly varying environments and under a large-system approximation, the maximal Lyapunov exponent can be approximated by the time-averaged rightmost spectral edge of the instantaneous interaction matrix, yielding explicit stability criteria for large ecological communities. Within the random-matrix interaction ensembles considered here, our minimal theoretical framework predicts a topology-dependent ordering of local perturbation stability under periodic temporal modulation in high-dimensional ecological networks, which is supported by numerical simulations. Beyond the adiabatic regime, rapid environmental oscillations dynamically stabilize otherwise unstable ecosystems, revealing a high-frequency rescue effect that is absent from static theories. These results extend ecological stability theory beyond autonomous systems and provide a general framework for understanding resilience in fluctuating environments.

Consistent determination of stability regimes in natural ecological communities from abundance time series

The stability of an ecological community is conventionally defined through species interactions, which quantify how species affect one another. Interaction strengths are notoriously difficult to measure in species-rich assemblages. Long-term monitoring of species-rich communities, however, provides species abundance ti...

Resource supply dynamics control stability and chaos in complex ecosystems

Ecological interactions are often mediated by feedbacks between organisms and their resource environments. Yet, how resource supply dynamics dictate collective dynamical phases of an ecosystem remains unclear. Here, we analyse a generalised consumer–resource model with non-reciprocal interactions to demonstrate that se...

Spatiotemporal patterns in predator-prey system with free space and limited resources.

A predator-prey model in which prey recruitment is governed by limited resources and is described by the Beverton-Holt function is employed, providing a biologically meaningful frame that explores how habitat occupancy shapes ecological interactions and spatial self-organization.

Heterogeneity among and competition between life stages together extend the stability boundary of complex ecological communities

Classical models of pairwise species interactions consistently predict that large, complex communities are inherently unstable, yet the observed persistence of diverse communities highlights a central contradiction in theoretical ecology. While foundational frameworks often model species as homogeneous populations, one...

Fitness, predictability and equilibrium in biological dynamics

Understanding eco-evolutionary dynamics presents significant mathematical challenges, particularly regarding predictability, equilibrium, and the mathematical representation of fitness. Using Open System Dynamics and Stochastic Analysis, we develop a theoretical framework to characterize fitness change and its relation...
