Abstract

Purpose

The United States (US) has a growing Brazilian immigrant population, yet little is known about mammography screening in this population. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify factors associated with mammogram recency among Brazilian immigrant women in the United States.

Methods

For this cross-sectional study, Brazilian-born women living in the US were recruited from community organizations and social media sites, completed an online survey in 2020 Bivariate analyses assessed the associations between mammogram recency (within two years vs. never/3 + years) and healthcare-related variables (insurance status, having a usual healthcare provider (HCP), HCP visit within the last year), and demographic characteristics (age, education, income, marital status, years in the US, primary language) among respondents aged 40+. Variables significant at p<0.10 were included in a multivariable logistic regression model examining mammogram recency.

Results

Of 186 women in the sample, 65.1% had a mammogram within two years. In the bivariate analyses, age, years living in the US, having insurance, a usual HCP, and an HCP visit within the last year were associated with mammogram recency (p<0.10). The multivariable logistic regression model revealed that having a mammogram in the last two years was associated with age (OR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.06, 1.12) and having an HCP visit in the last year (OR = 2.00, 95% CI: 1.15, 3.48).

Conclusion

One-third of study participants had not had a mammogram within the past two years, so increased efforts to promote mammography among Brazilian-born women may be warranted. Outreach to older women without a recent healthcare visit should be prioritized.
