The Gig Economy and Sustainable Livelihood

Sep 2026 · Frontiers in Social Sciences Research · 0 citations

Abstract

The rise of the gig economy has changed how people find and do work for their living. App based platform offers flexibility, quick access to jobs, and increases the chances of the workers to earn without traditional employment barriers. But behind this flexibility and freedom lies a major important question: Does gig work actually support a stable and sustainable livelihood for those who completely depends on itfor their survival? This dissertation explores this question by looking closely at the everyday experiences of gig workers and the economic realities shaped by the platform-based works. This study used a quantitative and explanatory approach to understand how income, job security, social protection function with gig work. A regression analysis is used to identify sustainable income patterns, examining how factors like working hours, skills, and platform feasibility influence a worker’s earning stability and their livelihood. Simultaneously the research reflects on current policy debates and the limited protections available to gig workers in the absence of formal worker rights. The findings represent that the gig work offers convenience, flexibility, short-term income opportunities but it often brings uncertainty rather than long-term stability. Fluctuating wages, dependence on algorithms, lack of benefits, and minimal worker support creates an atmosphere where livelihood security remains fragile. The study strongly argues that to make gig work practically sustainable, stronger protection, fair platform policies, and thoughtful regulations are necessary. Overall, this dissertation contributes to the growing conversations on digital labour by examining the gap between the promise to the workers and the reality experienced by workers, and suggesting the pathways for creating a more secure, stronger, and inclusive future for platform-based work.
