Abstract

Collaboration has become a defining capability in managing complex construction projects. However, research on the conditions enabling effective collaboration remains fragmented across delivery models, governance contexts, and analytical perspectives. This study offers an analytical synthesis of existing literature to consolidate findings and uncover underlying structures. A systematic review of 53 peer-reviewed studies was carried out, using thematic and content analysis to identify common enablers of collaboration. Fifteen key enablers were identified and organized into three interconnected categories: Behavioral, procedural, and structural. The Behavioral category includes trust, communication, and commitment; the procedural category covers coordination, leadership, and decision-making; and the structural category involves roles, contracts, and fair risk-reward mechanisms. Rather than merely classifying enablers, the study interprets how these dimensions interact as a socio-technical system shaping collaborative performance. The paper also highlights important research gaps and future directions to guide empirical studies on measuring and improving collaboration. The findings help create a clearer and more integrated understanding of what enables effective collaboration in construction project management.
