Obstacles and epistemological profiles: a unity of thought in Bachelard’s degree for science education.
Abstract
Understanding the concepts of epistemological obstacle (EO) and epistemological profile (EP), when considered in an articulated manner, makes it possible to recognize a unity of thought in Bachelard's epistemology. Rather than fragmenting his thought, this unity enables a coherent interpretation of his epistemological framework, providing consistent foundations for theoretical reinterpretations in Science Education. In this theoretical essay, we examine the concepts of EO and EP as originally formulated by Bachelard, reflecting on the implications of understanding them as interrelated aspects of a broader system of thought. Based on this articulation, we propose the Principle of Epistemological Openness (PEO) as an interpretative framework for understanding both the historical openness of Bachelard's epistemological system and the interdependence between EO and EP. Finally, we present a theoretical outline that extrapolates these ideas in order to foster further reflections and contribute to theoretically and didactically coherent reinterpretations of Bachelard's thought in Science Education.
