Abstract

Let $S_k$ be the space of cusp forms of weight $k$ for ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$, with $\dim S_k\geq1$, and let $\chi_p=\left(\frac{\cdot}{p}\right)$ for odd primes $p$. For fixed $s$ with ${\rm Re}(s)>(k+1)/2$, we prove that the proportion of primes $p\leq X$ satisfying $L(h,\chi_p,s)=0$ tends to zero as $X\to\infty$, uniformly over nonzero $h\in S_k$. We also prove an analogous statement for nontrivial linear combinations of twisted symmetric square $L$-values of the normalized Hecke eigenforms when ${\rm Re}(s)>k$. The main ingredient of the proof is a non-concentration theorem for random Euler products under a pairwise local separation condition. As applications, we obtain spanning and density-one basis results in $S_k$ for the kernels associated with twisted standard and symmetric square $L$-functions, with explicit basis criteria in specified right half-planes when $\dim S_k=2$ or $3$. We show that almost every tuple of $\dim S_k$ primes gives a basis of $S_k^{\ast}$ from twisted periods at every noncentral critical index. We also prove a density-one result for rational bases of $S_k$ obtained from traces of Rankin-Cohen brackets of Eisenstein series at prime levels.

Asymptotics for number of indecomposable components of tensor powers of the natural $\mathrm{SL}_2$-module in odd characteristic

Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic $p$, let $G= {\rm SL}_2(K)$, and let $V$ be the natural representation of $G$. Let $b_k$ denote the number of $G$-indecomposable factors of $V^{\otimes k}$, counted with multiplicity, and let $\delta_p=1-\log_{p^2}\!\bigl(\tfrac{p+1}{2}\bigr)$. Then there e...

Simultaneous non-vanishing of twists of $\mathrm{GL}_3$ and $\mathrm{GL}_1$ $L$-functions

We show that for a fixed $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb Z)$ Hecke--Maass cusp form $F$, there are infinitely many primitive Dirichlet characters $\chi$ such that $L(1/2, F\times \chi)$ and $L(1/2, \chi)$ do not vanish \emph{simultaneously}. More precisely, we obtain an asympotic formula with a {\em power-saving} error term for...

$\ell$-Independence, slopes, and weights of $\ell$-adic cohomology groups of rigid spaces

Let $\ell$ and $p$ be distinct prime numbers, $K$ a local field with residue characteristic $p$, $C$ a complete algebraically closed extension of $K$, and $X$ a quasi-compact quasi-separated rigid space over $K$. When $\mathop{\mathrm{char}} K = 0$, we prove that the alternating sum of traces of elements in the positiv...

$p$-adic properties of division polynomials and algebraic sigma functions

Let $p \geq 5$ be a prime, let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve with good reduction. Let $F_n$ denote the $n$-division polynomial of $E$. Silverman proved that if the reduction is ordinary, then for every $P \in E(K) \setminus \hat{E}(K)$ and a suitable power $q$ of $p$, t...

A $\mathrm{GL}_3$ level analog of Selberg's result for $S(t)$

Let $\pi$ be a spherical cuspidal $\mathrm{GL}_3$ newform of prime level $N$ and trivial central character, and define $S(t,\pi)=\pi^{-1}\arg L(1/2+\textrm{i}t,\pi)$. Assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis for $L(s,\pi)$, we establish an asymptotic formula for each fixed weighted moment of $S(t,\pi)$ as $N\to\inft...

New algebraic points on covers of elliptic curves

For a smooth projective curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ of genus $\geq 2$ and $L/\mathbb{Q}$ an extension, we write $C(L)_{\text{new}}=\{P\in C(L):\mathbb{Q}(P)=L\}$. Recent work of Khawaja and Siksek conjectures that this set is empty for $100\%$ of degree $n$ number fields $L$, when ordered by absolute discriminant. Moreover, t...
