Continuous Glucose Monitoring and Long-Term Glycemic and Kidney Outcomes
Abstract
Key Points Question Is starting and continuing real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) associated with lower hemoglobin A1c level, lower urinary albumin-creatinine ratio, or improved estimated glomerular filtration rate in high-risk adults with type 2 diabetes? Findings In this comparative effectiveness research study of 25 648 adults with type 2 diabetes, long-term rtCGM use was associated with rapid, sustained lowering of hemoglobin A1c and later reductions in urinary albumin-creatinine ratio, with no meaningful change in estimated glomerular filtration rate. Meaning These results suggest that long-term rtCGM use is associated with better glycemic control and may lower the risk of albuminuria in high-risk patients, but confirmation in long-term randomized clinical trials is needed.
