Abstract

The Jewish people did not fully understand the nature and scope of the anticipated Messiah’s ministry. Isaiah 61:1 presents God’s work as spiritual liberation rather than the political deliverance from oppression expected by many Jewish leaders. This study aims to understand the meaning of the Messiah according to Isaiah 61:1 and examine its implications for mission and church ministry in the contemporary context. Using a descriptive research method with a literature review approach, this study analyzes the meaning of the Messiah and its relevance to mission and church ministry today. The analysis identifies four dimensions of Messianic theology. First, the Messiah is the bearer of good news (euangelion), ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ (Luke 4:18–19), encompassing spiritual salvation and social restoration. Second, the Messiah is the healer of the brokenhearted, emphasizing Christ’s pastoral work in healing emotional and inner wounds. Third, the Messiah is the liberator, bringing holistic freedom from sin, injustice, and suffering. Fourth, the Messiah is the comforter and restorer of those who mourn, symbolized by the transformation of ashes into a crown. Thus, the Messiah’s Spirit-anointed ministry fulfills God’s redemptive plan and provides a theological foundation for holistic mission and the development of a missional church that faithfully participates in the Great Commission.
