Integration of PLC Control with Python-Based Supervisory Interface for Real-Time Visualization and Data Logging
Abstract
The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system is widely used in industrial applications for monitoring, data processing, and supervisory control of processes in realtime. However, the system faces challenges in terms of license and infrastructural costs, making it unaffordable for small-scale industries, startups and academics. This paper proposes the design and development of a cost-effective monitoring system using a Python programming language and a Siemens S7-1200 PLC. The proposed system will enable the development of stable communication between the PLC and the Python-based graphical user interface. Real-time data acquisition, process visualization, supervisory control, and process logging are also considered in this process. A laboratory-scale industrial process prototype has been proposed to test the stability of communication, realtime response, and reliable functioning of the proposed PLCbased process control conditions. As shown in the experimental results, the stability of communication is ensured with optimal latency while minimizing the cost of deployment. Additionally, this research work provides an understanding of the application of open-source technology for developing flexible and scalable supervisory monitoring systems.
