Abstract

This letter presents a deep learning approach for Arctic sea ice concentration (SIC) downscaling based on multisensor fusion applied during the model training stage. While conventional downscaling methods primarily enhance spatial resolution, the proposed approach also improves physical consistency by fusing the widely used Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSISAF) SIC dataset with the high-resolution multisensor-corrected MASAM2 product. This synthesis not only increases spatial resolution from 25 to 4 km, but also yields more realistic ice patterns, as validated by a high structural similarity metric and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.02. A comparison of U-Net-based and attention U-Net architectures with classical interpolation methods, a conditional diffusion baseline, and a manual hybrid approach demonstrates the advantages of the proposed solution. The projection change between the two products is embedded in the network as a fixed resampling layer, removing the external remapping stage from the pipeline. The presented model has strong potential to improve sea ice forecasting quality and generate high-resolution historical datasets. Optimization of Spatial Downscaling Models for Satellite Imagery Based on Deep Learning and Generative Artificial Intelligence

Highlights What are the main findings? Off-the-shelf pretrained super-resolution models (ESRGAN, SwinIR) applied directly to Landsat-to-Sentinel-2 upscaling do not outperform bicubic interpolation on pixel-wise metrics, remaining statistically indistinguishable from it (Nemenyi post hoc), thereby revealing a domain ada...

Diffusion-Based Super-Resolution of Adriatic Sea Oceanographic Fields

High-resolution oceanographic fields are critical for resolving mesoscale and sub-mesoscale coastal dynamics, yet their generation remains constrained by both computational cost and observational sparsity. We present OcDiffSR, a conditional denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) for oceanographic super-resoluti...

A Physics-Informed Ensemble Learning Framework for Transferable Shallow Water Bathymetry Inversion in Data-Scarce Regions

Satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) is a critical technology for estimating shallow water depths. However, the extreme scarcity of field measurements in remote or inaccessible regions, such as the coral reefs of the South China Sea (SCS), poses a significant challenge for accurate bathymetric retrieval. Traditional SDB...

A Deep Learning Approach for Bottom Detection in Multibeam Water-Column Data via Full-Swath Spatial Context

Bottom detection and tracking from multibeam echosounder water-column data constitute a fundamental step to 3D seabed mapping. Traditional methods based on amplitude thresholding and phase detection rely heavily on heuristic assumptions and are prone to failure in the presence of interference in water-column data. To a...

Enhancing the Spatial Resolution of Monthly Gravity Solutions Derived from SLR and DORIS

Monthly gravity-field solutions derived from satellite laser ranging (SLR) and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) provide an observational record that extends well before the GRACE era but resolve only a limited range of spatial wavelengths. In this study, we implement deep learni...
