Competencies for the AI era: Lessons from cross-border higher education collaboration
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming industry, higher education and workforce development. This article examines how cross-border experiential learning can support reflection on human-centred AI competencies among Generation Z students. The study draws on a qualitative analysis of focus-group discussions, poster outputs, and SWOT reflections conducted during an international Blended Intensive Programme involving 50 students from six universities in Germany, Poland, and Czechia. Students collaborated in interdisciplinary teams to explore AI-supported business and HR processes and identify competencies required for responsible implementation. Thematic content analysis revealed that students perceived AI primarily as a tool for enhancing efficiency, transparency and organisational decision-making rather than replacing human work. Participants emphasised critical thinking, ethical awareness, adaptability, communication and AI literacy. Interpreted through Intelligent Career Theory, the findings provide context-specific insights into how collaborative and practice-oriented learning formats can support students’ reflection on AI-related employability requirements and strengthen connections between higher education and workplace needs.
