Performance Evaluation of Mobile RSUs in Urban Intersections
Abstract
This paper presents a simulation-based evaluation of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication using mobile roadside units (mRSUs) mounted on public transport vehicles in an urban environment. The proposed approach evaluates three deployment scenarios: static RSUs, tram-mounted mRSUs, and a hybrid combination of both. The simulation environment integrates microscopic traffic modeling in SUMO with wireless network simulation in OMNeT++ using the Veins framework. Realistic tram movement is derived from public transport telemetry and GTFS datasets, enabling accurate modeling of urban mobility patterns. The study evaluates communication performance at intersections with varying traffic and infrastructure complexity using metrics such as received signal strength, packet delivery ratio, and line-of-sight duration. The results show that mRSUs can effectively complement static infrastructure in dense urban areas, while hybrid deployments require interference mitigation mechanisms to maintain communication reliability.
