TOPOGRAPHIC MAP AS A FUNDAMENTAL TOOL FOR PHYSICAL PLANNING AND SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
Topographic maps are essential geospatial tools that provide accurate representation of the Earth’s surface features, including terrain characteristics, natural resources, and human-made structures. Their application in physical planning and sustainable national development has become increasingly important due to the growing need for efficient land management, infrastructure development, environmental conservation, and disaster risk reduction. This paper examines the significance of topographic maps as a fundamental resource for spatial decision-making and sustainable development planning. It highlights their roles in urban and regional planning, engineering design, environmental management, agricultural development, and resource allocation. The study emphasizes the integration of modern surveying technologies such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and remote sensing in improving the accuracy, accessibility, and usability of topographic information. The paper further discusses challenges affecting the production and utilization of topographic maps, including outdated datasets, limited technical capacity, and inadequate institutional support. It concludes that up-to-date and reliable topographic maps are indispensable for achieving sustainable national development goals through informed planning, effective resource management, and resilient infrastructure development. Strengthening geospatial data acquisition, updating mapping systems, and promoting collaboration among relevant stakeholders are recommended to maximize the benefits of topographic mapping in national development.
