TL;DR

A preliminary study found no significant differences in serum irisin or IR between early-onset AGA patients and healthy controls suggesting that irisin signaling may be more pronounced in phenotypes with a higher metabolic load, however, higher BMI and waist circumference in AGA patients suggest a predisposition to obesity-related metabolic disorders.

Abstract

Objective

Early-onset androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of male hair loss and is associated with metabolic dysregulation. Irisin is an adipomyokine that has been proposed to regulate insulin sensitivity and metabolic syndrome (MS). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the serum irisin levels and metabolic parameters associated with insulin resistance (IR) in male patients with early-onset AGA.

Materials And Methods

This case-control study included 40 male patients (mean age: 23.1) with early-onset AGA and 40 healthy men (mean age: 22.5). Anthropometric measurements (body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure) and fasting biochemical parameters (glucose, insulin, lipid profile, uric acid, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)) were assessed. To evaluate IR, the Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA-IR) was used.

Results

Early-onset AGA patients had significantly higher BMI and waist circumference compared to controls (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in blood pressure, presence of IR, glucose, insulin, lipid levels, uric acid, hs-CRP, ESR and serum irisin levels between groups (p > 0.05). Severity of disease was not associated with differences in biochemical parameters or serum irisin levels.

Conclusion

This preliminary study found no significant differences in serum irisin or IR between early-onset AGA patients and healthy controls suggesting that irisin signaling may be more pronounced in phenotypes with a higher metabolic load. However, higher BMI and waist circumference in AGA patients suggest a predisposition to obesity-related metabolic disorders. Early monitoring of men with early-onset AGA may help prevent long-term cardiometabolic consequences.

Circulating CTRP-1 levels are elevated in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: A case–control study

Circulating CTRP-1 levels are elevated in women with PCOS and appear to be associated with both metabolic and reproductive characteristics of the syndrome, and ROC curve analysis demonstrated excellent discriminatory ability within this cohort.

Serum Prolactin, Glycemic Control, and Insuline Resistance in Type 2 Diabetes in Iraq: A Sex-Stratified Cross-Sectional Comparative Studay

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents an increasing health burden in Iraq. Prolactin (PRL) is involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism since high PRL serum levels are associated with low incidence of T2DM. This study evaluated the relationship between serum prolactin levels and key indicators of glycemic c...

Association Between Serum Amylin, Irisin, and Sirtuin 1 in Male Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and Diabetic Nephropathy

Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a progressive disease worldwide that leads to various complications. Given the roles of the hormones amylin and irisin and the enzyme sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) in metabolism and oxidative stress, we focused on these parameters in the serum of patients. Objectives We investigated the...

Associations of Irisin and visceral adiposity index with cardiometabolic risk and their predictive value in Jordanian adults: A cross-sectional study

Introduction: Irisin affects obesity and cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS) risk factors, but its precise mechanism and relationship with visceral adiposity index (VAI) remain unclear. The aim of this research is to explore the associations between circulating irisin, VAI, obesity indices, and cardiometabolic risk, and to...
