A Scalable Framework for Stability Assessment of Power Systems with Black-Box Models
Abstract
The increasing penetration of power-electronic converter–interfaced assets and the widespread use of black-box models pose major challenges for stability assessment of modern power systems. This paper proposes a scalable, sequential stability assessment framework that integrates steady-state feasibility analysis, operating-point–dependent small-signal stability assessment, and selective large-signal electromagnetic transient (EMT) validation within a decision-driven workflow. The approach relies on frequency-domain admittance models and stability metrics to identify critical operating conditions. By progressively filtering out operating scenarios based on static and small-signal analyses the number of transient nonlinear simulations is minimized. Therefore, the framework offers a comprehensive stability assessment with reduced computational cost. The methodology is tested on a converter-dominated electrical energy hub with offshore wind generation integrated via AC interconnections and a bipolar HVDC link.
