Dialectic of the material. Rethinking the relationship between matter and the ideal

Abstract

This paper argues for a dialectical understanding of materialism that accounts for the relationship between the material and the ideal. While traditional materialist philosophies have often focused on the primacy of matter, they have struggled to integrate the ideal as an active component of social and epistemological processes. Conversely, recent materialist approaches such as New Materialism risk dissolving the distinction between the two, thereby undermining the materialist foundation itself. Drawing on the work of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and more recent dialectical theorists, this study contends that matter should be understood not merely as an ontological category but in its mediated relationship to ideal activity. The ideal is not a disembodied form or pure cognition but a historically conditioned aspect of human activity that both reflects and shapes material reality through processes of objectification and idealization. The dialectic of the material thus requires a nuanced conception of reflection, understood as a specific moment of the objective transformation and translation of material conditions through human praxis. By analyzing the conceptual status of “matter” as a boundary abstraction, the paper clarifies the distinct roles of philosophy and science while preserving their mutual interdependence. It concludes that a viable materialist philosophy must integrate the ideological and cognitive dimensions of ideality into a dialectical framework that preserves the primacy of the material – not by positing it as an unexamined first principle, but by demonstrating its structuring role in the formation of knowledge, practice, and society. The dialectic of the material, so conceived, offers a non-reductionist account of materiality that is historically grounded, socially mediated, and theoretically reflexive.
