A VR-Immersive Teaching Case
Abstract
This case study explored the design and implementation of virtual reality (VR)-based immersive technology to enhance intercultural knowledge transfer in the context of English as a foreign language learning. Grounded in intercultural competence theory, the study examined how environmental immersion, situational interaction, and interactive feedback influenced learners' communication skills and cultural adaptability. The VR-based intervention was applied in a university-level English as a foreign language classroom, where it generated authentic multicultural contexts that improved learner engagement and expressivity. In addition, the VR intervention enhanced learners' cognitive and emotional engagement when compared with traditional instruction. The study's findings highlighted VR's effectiveness in simulating real-world intercultural interactions, supporting experiential learning, and improving knowledge retention. The case study demonstrated how immersive technologies served as a powerful tool with potential for developing advanced global competence; the findings can inform the design of future technology-enhanced learning environments.
