Networks in Finance: Foundations and Frontiers

Sep 2026 · Annual Review of Financial Economics · 1 citation

Abstract

Networks in finance shape how value is created and how risks emerge, both systemic and systematic. We survey how different networks, including production, banking, director, and information networks, propagate micro shocks and transmit them to broader levels of aggregation. First, we synthesize the literature on the efficiency–stability trade-off governing systemic risk: Interconnections transmit gains, liquidity, and knowledge but create channels for contagion. Beyond the foundational focus on within-network transmission, we extend the discussion to across-network spillovers. Second, moving from systemic to systematic risk, we show how network topology drives the stochastic discount factor, affecting factors and expected returns. We also trace how networks form and evolve, dynamically generating new sources of risk. By adopting a macro perspective that unifies distinct networks into an overarching network of networks (meta-network), we focus on shared propagation mechanisms and outline directions for future research, including how networks may evolve with the rise of AI, intangibles, and deglobalization.

Systemic Risk in a Multilayer Financial Network: A Criticality-Based Perspective

Banks and firms are connected through multiple credit relationships that can transmit financial shocks across sectors, amplify default contagion, and ultimately lead to system-wide collapse. Understanding systemic risk therefore requires not only examining default contagion mechanisms but also characterizing system-wid...

Research on Risk Contagion Mechanism of Financial Markets Based on Complex Network Theory

Against deepening global financial integration, traditional linear risk tools cannot capture time-lagged cascading risk spillovers, while existing epidemic-network studies separately analyze multilayer topology, temporal transmission and node centrality without unified frameworks. This paper develops a temporal multila...

Information Networks and Inflation Expectations

How are inflation expectations affected by foreign supply shocks? We show that, beyond bilateral exposure, a second network matters: the one linking forecasters to the countries they cover. Using forecasterlevel expectations around conflict episodes—precisely dated supply shocks that raise inflation through trade and e...
