Abstract

The article argues that amid global transformations, young people's orientation toward a strong family as the foundation of traditional spiritual and moral values is becoming increasingly relevant. At the same time, the individualization of life trajectories, along with engagement in digital media practices, exerts a significant influence on contemporary perceptions of parenthood among the youth. The primary objective of the study was to examine the place of parenthood within the life orientations of young people. Drawing on the results of an online survey of youth aged 18 to 35 residing in a large industrial city (n=226), the study found that while parenthood is present in their life orientations, it is more often positioned as a deferred priority relative to financial stability, professional self-fulfillment, family formation, and psychological well-being. Young people tend to postpone the realization of their reproductive intentions until the age of 30, viewing parenthood primarily as a sphere of responsibility and expression of love, as well as a source of personal growth. The findings reveal that social media constitute a significant factor shaping perceptions of parenthood: the majority of respondents regularly encounter parenting content despite having no direct parenting experience themselves. At the same time, media content exerts a dual influence on them: on the one hand, it fosters greater awareness and reflexivity, while on the other, it may amplify apprehension, anxiety, and a sense of discrepancy with idealized models and standards. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the finding that parenthood is embedded in the life orientations of young people, yet its realization requires the prior accumulation of various resources. Moreover, digital media, in addition to their educational function, can also perform an anxiogenic function, evoking feelings of fear and inadequacy. It appears important to engage media personalities and influencers who are capable of shaping the demographic agenda by incorporating into their content the demonstration of the value of parenthood and the diversity of its practices. Such efforts would contribute to overcoming fears and fostering a culture of responsible parenthood.
