Urban Growth in Al-Hillah City: A Geographical Analysis of Spatial Transformation Patterns

Sep 2026 · Al-Ameen Journal of Humanities · 0 citations

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the urban expansion of Al-Hillah City and identify the natural and human factors influencing its growth, with particular emphasis on the spatial transformations experienced by the city and their implications for land use patterns. The research adopts descriptive, analytical, and spatial approaches, utilizing statistical data, maps, satellite imagery, and official sources to examine the trends of urban growth and identify the principal driving forces behind its expansion. The findings indicate that population growth, the expansion of economic and service activities, and improvements in the transportation network, together with the city's favorable natural characteristics—particularly its flat topography and the presence of the Al-Hillah Branch of the Euphrates River—have been the major factors contributing to the continuous expansion of the urban area in recent years. The results also reveal that this urban growth has led to the conversion of surrounding agricultural lands into urban uses, increased pressure on infrastructure and public services, and reduced the per capita share of green spaces in several neighborhoods. Accordingly, the study recommends adopting sustainable urban planning strategies that balance urban development requirements with the protection of agricultural land, while expanding green areas and upgrading infrastructure to accommodate future population growth.
