Geospatial Analysis of Urban Settlements in Albania During the Period 1990-2023
Abstract
This study focuses on the geospatial analysis of urban settlements in Albania from 1990 to 2023. The processing of geographic and statistical information through GIS technology enabled the creation of thematic maps, where the centre of gravity of cities was calculated, the distribution according to horizontal and vertical zonality of urban settlements was assessed, as well as the population trend over the last three decades, etc. Cities were classified into three groups based on demographic dynamics: cities experiencing expansion, cities experiencing stability, and those in decline. Natural geographical factors, such as proximity to the sea, altitude, steepness, and the slopes, turn out to have an important role in the creation and sustainable development of settlements. This analysis reflects the current trends and future potentials of urbanisation in Albania. It assists the government in implementing adequate economic policies, rational territorial planning, and drafting regional strategies.
