Designing STEM-Based Technology Lessons for Grade 6 Students: A Curriculum Design Framework and an Illustrative Lesson

Sep 2026 · EJSMT · 0 citations

Abstract

STEM education provides an approach for connecting school knowledge with authentic problems, technological design, and the development of students’ problem-solving capabilities. In Vietnam, the 2018 General Education Curriculum identifies Technology as a subject with strong potential for STEM integration, yet teachers need practical design principles for translating this orientation into coherent Grade 6 lessons. This study develops a curriculum-design framework for STEM-based Technology lessons and illustrates its application through an energy-efficient house design task. The study employed qualitative document analysis, literature synthesis, curriculum analysis, and pedagogical design. International research on integrated STEM, engineering design, Technology Education, and middle-school learning was synthesized with the Grade 6 Technology curriculum in Vietnam. The analysis resulted in a seven-stage framework: identifying curriculum outcomes; defining an authentic technological problem; mapping STEM knowledge and practices; establishing design criteria and constraints; organizing inquiry and engineering design; testing and redesigning prototypes; and assessing and reflecting on learning. The illustrative lesson demonstrates how the Grade 6 housing topic can be transformed from descriptive learning into an integrated design challenge in which students use science to reason about light, heat, and ventilation, mathematics to measure and scale, Technology to select materials and understand housing systems, and engineering to generate, test, and improve solutions. The framework emphasizes that STEM integration should be explicit and purposeful rather than a simple combination of subjects or a hands-on craft activity. The study contributes a context-sensitive model that can support teachers in designing feasible, curriculum-aligned STEM experiences while maintaining the disciplinary identity of Technology Education.
