Abstract

This article discusses the issues related to the methods of determining the semantic aspects of language signs. It states that there are many words as synonyms for "semantics" and, on the other hand, in the definition of the main semantic categories in modern linguistics, a single position has not yet been formed in terms of meaning and continuity, sign, importance, types of linguistic meaning, absolute and relative semantic importance, etc. This situation demands the linguists to be comprehensively careful while interpreting the contextual expressions. It is because there exist various levels of the language units in general, and many unresolved issues, insufficiently researched problems that are not seriously formulated as concepts yet. From this viewpoint the ontological, methodological and descriptive, component-structural and ethnolinguistic features of semantics should be carefully studied. Further, the author hoplites the major designation of the semantics of language signs to be attributed mainly to serve for the following purposes: – provide reflector and thinking processes; – represent mental content indirectly and abstractly; – to determine the historically marked meaning in the form of common collective values for known segments and members of society; – to ensure the process of communication in all aspects of human activity. Key words: semantics, semantic category, ontological property, component analysis, methodical analysis, ethnolinguistic direction
