Abstract

. This study examines the construction of discursive ethos in a forum for a distance learning graduate program, using an active peer-review methodology based on an activity involving critical textual analysis of style, composition, and theme. This activity contributes to the development of the participants’ linguistic-discursive competence, as they are tasked with carefully reading and analyzing each other’s discourse for evaluative purposes. We aim to analyze the linguistic-discursive construction of such texts from the perspective of the subject as both a student and, simultaneously, an evaluator of others’ writing, thereby demonstrating their discursive ethos. We applied a qualitative research methodology, employing bibliographic and documentary procedures. We drew upon the studies of Amossy and Zaglavia (2007), Amossy (2011, 2016), Bacich and Moran (2018), Bakhtin (1997/1979), Maingueneau (2008, 2020), Miller (1984, 2012), among others, who generally consider language to be a dialogic and social practice, realized in genres of discourse, also constituted in digital media. The analysis revealed a perception of language imbued with subjectivities, in which the ethé are discursively thoughtful, complimentary, and critical, yet consistent with the pedagogical criteria adopted and the asynchronous nature of forums in distance learning courses.
