The impact of early multiple language exposure on hyperactivity/inattention symptom trajectories during childhood: Results from a UK birth cohort

Abstract

Inattention and hyperactivity are common in childhood, yet their developmental trajectories vary widely. This study examines whether early multiple language exposure (MLE) is associated with hyperactivity/inattention symptoms using data from 13,175 participants in the UK Millennium Cohort Study. MLE, reported by parents at age 3, and symptoms, measured with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire at ages 5, 7 and 11, were analysed through growth mixture modelling. Four trajectory classes were identified: low-stable, high-decreasing, low-increasing, and high-stable symptoms. Children with early MLE were more likely to belong to the high-decreasing than to either the low-increasing class or the high-stable class, even after adjusting for cognitive ability and socio-demographic factors. These findings indicate an association between early MLE and trajectory membership, after adjustment for cognitive ability and socio-demographic/family factors. Given the observational design and the coarse, parent-reported assessment of MLE, interpretations about mechanisms or applied implications should remain cautious.

Longitudinal Exposure Patterns of Parent–Child Interaction Frequency and Emotional and Behavioral Difficulties and Neurodevelopmental Delays in Preschool Children: A Three-Wave Observational Study

Parent–child interaction frequency may vary during the transition into kindergarten and across activity content, but whether persistent or repeated low-frequency interaction is associated with preschool children’s emotional-behavioral and neurodevelopmental outcomes remains unclear. We examined whether three-wave overa...

Associations between early-life socioeconomic, family and child factors, and anxiety and depression co-developmental trajectories in Brazil - analysis of the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort

Background Anxiety and depression often co-occur and typically arise early in the life course. Despite the high prevalence of these conditions in low- and middle-income countries, evidence of early-life factors associated with their developmental patterns remains limited in these settings. Understanding these factors c...

Growth trajectories and early-life attention and memory outcomes: Parallel analyses of cohorts in Malawi and the USA.

BACKGROUND Variations in early-life growth patterns may reflect differences in early postnatal exposures influencing child attention and memory. OBJECTIVE We identified growth trajectories and explored their associations with attention and memory among infants and young children across time points. METHODS Anthropo...
