Evaluation of the histological and hormonal effects of the thyroid gland and skin after treatment with 510 nm Laser beam in albino laboratory rats
Abstract
Background: Laser plays a significant role in therapeutics applications and medical fields. Aim: The goal of the research was to determine the effect of 510 nm Laser beam on thyroid gland and skin tissues in rats. Methods: male Swiss albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) were used, with age ranged between 12-14 weeks and their weights were (190-210 grams). The rats were randomly assigned to two groups, with six rats in both groups: Control group was not exposed to any beam and other group was subjected to six pulses of laser light per day for 2 weeks. Results: No alterations were observed in the thyroid gland tissue of the laser –exposed group. The results of the current study indicate no large effect was detected in the concentration of thyroid hormones when comparing the treated group with the control group. The treated group showed tissue damage of skin, the tissue damage induced by the laser was characterized by homogeneous hyaline appearance, epidermal loss with coagulation and hair loss due to collapse and shrinkage of hair follicle at different depths within burn area. Conclusions: No large effects on thyroid histology or serum T3, T4, and TSH levels were detected under these experimental conditions. Therefore, these findings cannot be used to support the safety or efficacy of the Deess GP585 for hair removal in humans. Future studies using pigmented models and clinically relevant wavelengths (755/810/1064 nm) are warranted
