Abstract

We show that the worst-case combinatorial discrepancy of $n$ points in the plane with respect to axis-parallel rectangles is $\Theta(\log^{3/2}n)$. The known bounds were $\Omega(\log n)$ and $O(\log^{3/2}n)$; we prove the matching lower bound. It holds for random point sets: for every $A>0$, there is a constant $c_A>0$ such that, with probability at least $1-e^{-An}$, every coloring of $n$ independent uniform points in the unit square has an anchored rectangle with imbalance at least $c_A(\log_2n)^{3/2}$. The proof is surprisingly simple and elementary. It reveals one coordinate digit by digit. With overwhelming probability over the points, the conditional gains of an oscillation potential add up to $\Omega(\log^{3/2}n)$ over $\Theta(\log n)$ digits. Bounded differences control the fluctuations well enough for a union bound over all colorings.

Sharper Zarankiewicz and Diagonal Bipartite Ramsey Bounds

We prove that there is an absolute positive constant $c$ such that every bipartite graph with $N$ vertices in each part and at least $N^2/2$ edges contains a complete bipartite graph $K_{t,t}$ whenever $N\ge c\, 2^{t}$. This improves the classical K\H{o}v\'ari-S\'os-Tur\'an bound requiring $N$ of order $t\,2^t $. As a...

A quadratic upper bound on the Chv\'atal rank of polytopes in the 0/1-cube

We show that every polytope $P\subseteq[0,1]^n$, and more generally every compact convex set, has Chv\'atal rank at most $12.22n^2+n\log_2 n+2n+4$. This improves the $O(n^2\log n)$ bound of Eisenbrand and Schulz and, together with the $\Omega(n^2)$ lower bound of Rothvo{\ss} and Sanit\`a, shows that the maximum Chv\'at...

A Resolution of Friedgut's Conjecture on Influential Coalitions

We prove that, for every constant $\varepsilon>0$ and every function $f:\Sigma^n\to\{0, 1\}$, there is a coalition of $O(n/\sqrt{\log n})$ coordinates and a target output $b\in\{0, 1\}$ such that, after the remaining coordinates are sampled uniformly and independently, the coalition can choose its values to make the ou...

Optimal bound for the polynomial Littlewood-Offord problem

We present an exposition of an argument, discovered by GPT-6 Pro, that gives an optimal bound for the polynomial Littlewood-Offord problem. Namely, let $F$ be a degree-$d$ multilinear polynomial that contains $r$ degree-$d$ monomials involving disjoint sets of variables. Then, for i.i.d. Rademacher random variables $\x...

A Log-Free $n^{1/5}$ Bound for Chowla's Cosine Problem

For a finite set $S$ of positive integers, put $K(S):=-\min_{x\in\mathbb T}\sum_{s\in S}\cos(2\pi sx)$. Bedert recently proved the uniform lower bound $K(S)\geq |S|^{1/5-o(1)}$. We remove the subpolynomial loss and prove that $K(S)\geq c|S|^{1/5}$ for an absolute constant $c>0$. The proof combines two estimates from Be...

Discrepancy of geometric incidences

We study the combinatorial (red-blue) discrepancy of finite point sets with respect to hyperplanes and, more generally, bounded-complexity affine algebraic sets. We prove that every $n$-point set in a real Euclidean space admits a red-blue coloring for which every affine algebraic set of dimension at most $D$ and degre...
